Information We Collect

PlainHazard does not require user registration or collect personal information directly. We use third-party analytics and advertising services that may collect certain data as described below.

Analytics

We use privacy-focused analytics (Umami) to understand how visitors use our site. This service collects anonymized usage data including page views, referrer information, and general device information. No personally identifiable information is collected or stored.

We also use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) which may collect additional data subject to Google's privacy policy.

Advertising

Server Logs & Security Data

Like most websites, our hosting and content-delivery infrastructure (Cloudflare) automatically records standard request logs, IP address, browser user-agent, requested URL, and timestamp, for the limited purposes of delivering pages, preventing abuse, and diagnosing errors. These logs are retained for a short rolling window and are not combined with any advertising or analytics profile we control. We do not sell, rent, or trade this information.

Data Retention

Because PlainHazard does not operate user accounts, we hold no profile data to retain or delete on your behalf. Aggregated, anonymized analytics counts (such as total page views per article) are kept indefinitely in summary form because they contain no information that can identify an individual. Any data collected by Google Analytics or Google AdSense is governed by Google's own retention controls, which you can adjust in your Google account.

Legal Basis & EU/UK Visitors (GDPR)

For visitors in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom, our legal basis for processing limited technical data is legitimate interest in operating a secure, functional website, and, for advertising and non-essential analytics cookies, your explicit consent, captured through the consent dialog shown on your first visit. You can withdraw consent at any time by clearing cookies or adjusting your choices in the dialog. You have the right to access, rectify, or erase any personal data, and to lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority.

Children's Privacy

PlainHazard is a general-audience reference site and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information through an embedded third-party service, please contact us and we will work with that provider to address it.
