How this ranking is measured
Property and crop damage as the National Weather Service estimated it for each record in NOAA's Storm Events Database, 1996 to date, converted to 2025 dollars with the BLS CPI-U annual average of each record's year. Estimates are often made quickly after an event and many records carry none, so totals are a floor, not an insured or economic loss.
